The 2009 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau is a beauty. A blend of 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and the rest an assortment of varieties, all from La Crau, it exhibits a traditional, muscular bouquet of both red and black fruits, white pepper, rolled stone, iron, and spice cabinet-like characteristics. Simply an astonishing field blend of old-vine Garnacha Tinta and Viura, although in the vineyard there are also scattered vines of Tempranillo, Malvasía, Graciano, Mazuelo, and some unknown variety. The percentage of red and white varieties is very similar. The vineyard sits at 2k feet above sea level in Rioja, Spain. This Rosé (non saigner) sings in the glass with perfect balance. The 2022 Château Picque Caillou is a classic Bordeaux blend. It's quite elegant, made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. Ripe black cherries, flowery incense, graphite, and spicy nuances define the nose; it's medium-bodied, with a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Old Sparky reveals lots of cassis, spring flower, graphite and spice characteristics along with good minerality.
